What is Asphalt?

Asphalt is a mixture of two materials:

  • Bitumen is a sticky, black, highly viscous hydrocarbon material and is a natural byproduct of the crude oil refining process, commonly used as a binding agent.
  • Aggregates are solid materials used to create bulk and structure, such as crushed rock, sand, or gravel

Benefits of Asphalt

There are several reasons why asphalt is a great material for paving.

  1. Cost-effective: Initial installation costs, as well as maintenance and repair expenses, are generally lower for asphalt when compared to other materials like concrete or interlocking pavers.
  2. Quick installation: Asphalt can be installed relatively quickly, allowing for shorter project timelines and less disruption to the usability of the area.
  3. Durability: Asphalt’s extreme durability gives it the ability to withstand heavy traffic loads. It also has excellent resistance to cracking, which is essential in a parking lot where vehicles frequently turn, stop, and park.
  4. Flexibility: Because asphalt is slightly flexible, it can adapt to slight ground movements and temperature fluctuations. This helps prevent cracking and other damage that can occur with more rigid materials.
  5. Smooth and quiet surface: Asphalt provides a smooth, even surface for vehicles to drive on, offering a comfortable ride. It also produces less noise from tire contact, resulting in a quieter facility.
  6. Quick repairs: Localized repairs for damage such as potholes or cracks can be done relatively quickly and cost-effectively, since they do not require extensive removal or replacement of the entire surface.
  7. Easy maintenance: Regular maintenance of an asphalt parking lot, such as sealcoating and periodic re-striping, helps extend its lifespan. Cleaning and snow removal are also generally easier on asphalt surfaces.
  8. Sustainability: Asphalt is a recyclable material, and reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) can be reused in new asphalt mixes. This recycling capability contributes to the sustainability of asphalt as a paving material. Asphalt Services

Cold planing involves removing the top layer of the asphalt surface that is worn out or damaged, revealing a smoother surface underneath. This is often done in preparation for resurfacing or overlaying.

Resurfacing or overlaying is applying a new layer of asphalt on top of the existing pavement to restore the smoothness, appearance, and functionality of the pavement. This is helpful when there is significant surface distress, but underlying layers are still structurally sound.

Slurry sealing or surfacing is a preventive maintenance treatment which can extend the life of asphalt pavements. Applying a thin layer of slurry seal onto the existing surface will protect and rejuvenate the asphalt, fill minor cracks, improve skid resistance, and improve its appearance.

Applying a sealcoating to your asphalt surface will protect it from oxidation, UV rays, moisture penetration, and chemical spills. It will also improve its overall appearance and allow for easier cleaning.
